Presentation of the brochure „Antisemitismus. Gesellschaftliche Herausforderung und pädagogisches Handeln“
Anti-Semitism is and remains a major social and therefore also an educational challenge. Anti-Semitic ideas are still deeply rooted in society. Whether coded or overt, public or private, stereotypes and hostile images are present in Austria in many different ways and continue to surface. But how can educators counter anti-Semitism in the classroom? The Documentation Center of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) and the OeAD program ERINNERN:AT, in cooperation with the Salzburg University of Education, have published the brochure “Anti-Semitism: A Social Challenge & Educational Action.” It is intended to support teachers in countering anti-Semitism – both when it is expressed and in terms of prevention. The 58-page handbook, written by Bianca Kämpf, Axel Schacht, and Adelheid Schreilechner, contains basic knowledge, recommendations for action, and a wealth of further information.
"With its programs and services, the OeAD is committed to ensuring that schools are safe, non-discriminatory, and inclusive places that offer all students the opportunity to receive an education. This also includes taking preventive action against anti-Semitism,“ says OeAD Managing Director Jakob Calice about the new publication.
”Teachers can make an immensely important contribution to addressing the many forms of anti-Semitism. We must not leave them alone in this. With this guide, we are giving them a tool to effectively recognize, identify, and combat anti-Semitism," says Andreas Kranebitter, Scientific Director of the DÖW.
The DÖW and the OeAD with its ERINNERN:AT programme were supported in the creation of the brochure by the PH Salzburg, which is a pillar of teacher training and continuing education. Adelheid Schreilechner, professor at the PH and co-author of the guide, says: "It has become difficult to talk about anti-Semitism – even in classrooms. Complex social dynamics, the escalation of violence in the Middle East, and global social media phenomena are heating up the mood. Many teachers find that dealing with the Holocaust is not enough to do justice to the complexity of the topic.“
Financial support for the production of the brochure came from the Federal Ministry of Education. Minister Christoph Wiederkehr welcomes the joint initiative of the DÖW, the OeAD, and the PH Salzburg: ”Anti-Semitism has no place in schools, which is why we support our teachers with quality-assured materials. The guide now being presented strengthens teachers' knowledge and skills. It is another milestone in the National Strategy against Anti-Semitism 2.0. The guide is available to all teachers and will also be used in training and continuing education from now on," said Federal Minister Wiederkehr at the presentation.
In November 2025, the federal government presented the “National Strategy against Anti-Semitism 2.0” with 49 concrete measures in eight areas of action, with education being one of the pillars of the strategy.
The handbook was publicly presented on February 4, 2026, at the Stefan Zweig Center in Salzburg.
