OeAD and cooperation partners invite you to the ‘Week of Cultural Education’ in Vienna and Tyrol from 20 to 26 May 2024

Communicating democracy and sustainability together with creative artists

From 20 to 26 May 2024, Austria's education agency OeAD, together with its cooperation partners Theaterensemble Nesterval, KunstHausWien and Galerie St. Barbara in Hall in Tirol, invites you to the "Week of Arts Education" with a diverse programme. The occasion is the "International Arts Education Week" proclaimed by UNESCO. The OeAD and UNESCO are thus focussing public attention on the importance of cultural education in and outside of school as well as participation in art and culture for young people.
"Cultural education strengthens learning with and through art and culture and supports children and young people in jointly shaping a resilient, democratic and sustainable future - this joint week is intended to emphasise this. As Austria's education agency, we promote cooperation between schools, cultural institutions and artists. We want to give children and young people the opportunity to actively engage with art and culture," emphasises OeAD Managing Director Jakob Calice.
Events centred around the topics of democracy and sustainability
The Arnold Schönberg Year 2024 was the occasion for the 4c class at the Hall in Tirol secondary school centre to explore the topic of "Exclusion: Power & Powerlessness" on the initiative of Galerie St. Barbara. The composer's life story served as the background for researching the fate of the Jewish population during the National Socialist era. The young people used artistic means of expression such as a film made from drawings, poems, texts and graphic novels to reflect on their experiences. These can be seen in an exhibition at the Kurhaus Hall.
How are images of the enemy and others constructed? Why is remembrance work important? What do the victims of National Socialism have to do with me? These are some of the questions that the theatre ensemble Nesterval addresses in the immersive theatre production "Der Rosa Winkel - die Geschichte der Namenlosen" in Vienna and which are discussed with 150 vocational school students as part of a three-part educational project. The play is a contemporary form of remembrance work, but it also draws attention to the situation of people who are currently suffering from discrimination, homophobic attacks or hate crimes.
Artworks and fascinating facts from science form the starting point for the interactive exploration of the exhibition "Into the Woods" in the indoor and outdoor spaces of the KunstHausWien, the centre of the first Vienna Climate Biennale. Vocational students for commerce and travel as well as horticulture and floristry approach the forest ecosystem as an important habitat by engaging with art and thus dealing with issues of sustainability.
