Application for special scholarships for Ukrainian students starts Quick help: 500 scholarships of 715 euros each The Ministry of Education, Science and Research supports Ukrainian students and scientists with a special programme for Ukraine. 500 Ernst Mach scholarships are currently available. The OeAD, Agency for Education and Internationalisation, issued a call for applications for these scholarships today at www.oead.at/ukraine-stipendium. The amount of this scholarship is 715 euros per person and month. The focus of the Ministry of Education, Science and Research’s special scholarships is, on one hand, to support the completion or continuation of studies already started in Austria and academic stays, and, on the other hand, to support taking up university studies. The scholarships are currently awarded for the current summer semester and the coming winter semester. “With our quick and unbureaucratic measures we support both Ukrainian students who already studied in Austria before the war and now face problems in continuing their studies due to a lack of financial support from home and students who had to flee Ukraine and now want to continue their studies at Austrian universities or other higher education institutions,” emphasises the minister of science Martin Polaschek. Academic cooperation between Ukraine and Austria has a long tradition. Especially in recent years the international higher education sector in Ukraine has developed strongly and Ukraine has been very active in international projects – both in the area of capacity building to improve the quality of higher education and in research. Besides the waiving of tuition fees and quick recognition of academic degrees the scholarship of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF) is now another important and sustainable step for Ukrainian students towards continuing their academic education. The OeAD’s managing director Jakob Calice emphasises: “We have been working closely with pre-university and academic partners in Ukraine for many years via the two OeAD cooperation offices in L'viv and Odesa. This war is not only a human catastrophe but it also destroys many important developments in Ukraine that have been implemented in education and higher education. It is therefore all the more important that these scholarships will contribute to continuing this cooperation and not letting networking with the Ukrainian higher education sector come to a halt.” OeAD lecturers also worked in Kyiv and L'viv until the outbreak of war. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine the OeAD also manages other measures to support Ukrainian students, researchers and higher education institutions. Besides the new scholarship programme these also include direct counselling for displaced students, researchers and scientists from Ukraine within the framework of different information services.
