#youngsciencerocks: OeAD wants to arouse interest in science and research Children’s and youth universities receive 1.2 million euros in funding Under this year’s motto “Experiencing Science – Shaping the Future” the OeAD implements numerous measures and compiles materials that deal with how the interest of the young generation in science and research can increasingly be awakened. For example, on 23 May 2022 experts will discuss about scepticism about science. The title of the event is “When trust is lacking. (New) challenges for science communication in the context of persistent science scepticism”. www.oead.at/wissenschaftskommunikation #youngsciencerocks: Experiencing Science – Shaping the Future To promote interest in science and research among pupils the OeAD currently collects initiatives, podcasts, (teaching) materials, etc. that teachers can use in their lessons. Research institutions that offer measures or materials for schools are invited to send information about them to youngscience@oead.at. All offers will be presented on the OeAD website www.youngscience.atas of mid-May 2022. Children’s and Youth Universities 2022 In 2022 the OeAD will once again support the organisation of the children’s and youth universities in Austria on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research (BMBWF). From the numerous project submissions 20 children’s and youth university projects with 14 extension modules will be funded by the BMBWF this year. The funding budget of 1.2 million euros is thus fully utilised. The projects take place at research institutions and also in public parks or online. The programmes are aimed at children and young people of all ages. Some of them start as early as kindergarten age; others support pupils in their last year of a higher secondary school with their pre-academic papers. The aim is to reach all children and young people regardless of their parents’ socio-economic status and to ensure inclusion. Additionally, holiday care with an academic claim is also offered. These one-week all-day care formats were funded for the first time in 2021 and were very popular. In the past year more than 40,000 participants were reached through the offers of the children’s and youth universities and holiday care with a scientific claim. An overview of all children’s and youth universities funded in 2022 is available at: https://youngscience.at/de/angebote/kinder-und-jugenduniversitaeten/gefoerderte-projekte-2022 Arousing interest in science and research Schools can still participate in five of seven (two are already fully booked) Citizen Science projects until the end of the school year within the framework of the Citizen Science Award: https://youngscience.at/citizen-science-award The research programme “Sparkling Science 2.0” funded by the BMBWF also offers schools the opportunity to actively take part in the research process. Which projects will be funded in the first call for proposals will be decided at the end of June 2022. They can start at the beginning of the next school year: www.sparklingscience.at The highlight of this year’s thematic focus “Experiencing Science – Shaping the Future” and at the same time the final event of this year’s Citizen Science Award is the OeAD Young Science Congress on 13 October 2022 at the University College of Teacher Education Vienna.
